Split ends? How to repair damaged hair

Split ends? How to repair damaged hair

So your strands are showing tell-tale signs of distress: split ends, dryness, damage and a dullness that just isn’t saying ‘healthy hair’. This is a common conundrum across hair types but we have good news! There is a way to repair your hair shaft, and prevent further damage. We hear from hundreds of people that are frustrated by the merry go round of false promises from all the dry hair treatments out there. Which is why we’ve done some digging to get a few things straight on the topic (pun totally intended).

What causes split ends?

First off, most split ends, dry hair and dullness are caused by things like heat drying - think blow dryers and flat ironing -  chemical treatments, or environmental damage like too much exposure to sun and saltwater. Then there are the harsh ingredients in regular shampoo and conditioner which aren’t making the situation any better. The biggest culprit to look out for if you’re wanting to protect your hair? Sneaky silicones - usually found in many different forms on ingredient labels but always ending in ‘cone’.

Why choose a silicone free conditioner?

While silicone in dry hair conditioners might promise instant shine, it can leave your hair feeling as flat as a pancake, eventually leading to dryness and brittleness – not exactly a moo-tivating situation! If you’re a soul with sensitive skin and dry scalp struggles then this ingredient is no friend to you, causing build up and irritation over time. Not to mention, recent research has found that siloxanes (the scientific name for silicones) are likely producing emissions that are harmful to our health. Oh and, they build up in ecosystems causing havoc in the environment. No thanks!

Silicone weighs hair down

Silicone may seem like the cream of the crop when it comes to repairing damaged hair and detangling stubborn knots, but it's not all it's cracked up to be. This synthetic substance can leave your hair feeling heavy and weighed down. Plus, it can block extra moisture from getting into your strands, leaving them as thirsty as if they’ve been left in the Sahara desert. Rather choose a natural formula packed with nourishing, hydrating ingredients. This will be the best conditioner for dry damaged hair in the long term.

A hair conditioner that hydrates naturally

Here at MooGoo, we're all about moo-ving away from harmful synthetic ingredients and embracing the more natural goodness of the pasture (lol, get it?). Our natural hair care range got started when a family member had a scalp so itchy, they resorted to sleeping with olive oil in their hair covered with cling wrap. First came the Milk Shampoo, which banished the cling wrap to the kitchen for good. And then, naturally, our Cream Conditioner was formulated to finish the hair wash routine for dry, sensitive scalps and strands. It’s a silicone-free conditioner also free from other nasties like parabens, packed instead with ingredients straight out of nature. A far friendlier way to repair split ends and bring the shine back into dull damaged hair.

Naturally nourishing oils like Jojoba and Olive Oil hydrate your strands whilst Milk Protein revitalises the hair fibres in this creamy, dreamy coconutty concoction. If you’re looking for a conditioner for curly hair, then look no further as we have countless testimonials from customers with curls absolutely loving the hydration and definition this silicone free conditioner gives them.

Don’t just take our word for it though, here are just a few five star reviews this high achiever has been given:

The Only Conditioner You Will Ever Need

I have very thick long hair that tangles easily. If left unbrushed I get dreadlocks underneath. Consequently I always comb through my conditioner often with difficulty. Along comes Moogoo Cream Conditioner. I was worried at first because the shampoo gives hair a good clean which means a big tangled ball of hair for me. I combed through the Moogoo conditioner and my comb went through like butter and removed all the knots with ease. This is the best conditioner I have ever used and I won’t be changing. - Shelley C

Wonderful

I have been using the cream conditioner for several years now, and I love it. It smells the same as the shampoo, which is a plus for me, feels great to use and is wonderful for dry hair and scalp. I use it root to tip, as I have been taught, and it leaves my hair soft and shiny and very manageable. My hair is waist length. - Nikkita H

Amazing!

My hair has never been softer, or cleaner than when using this conditioner!! I have tried so many different ones for my hair and knowing this is free of the nasty chemicals is next level awesome! The smell is also delicious! - Em P

How to use a conditioner properly for dry hair:

Start by washing your hair with a gentle sls free shampoo to remove dirt, excess oil, and product build up. Shampooing helps to cleanse the scalp and open up the hair cuticles, allowing the natural conditioner to penetrate more effectively. Rinse out the shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water before applying your natural conditioner. After shampooing, gently squeeze out excess water from your hair using your hands or by soft towel drying. It's essential to remove excess water to prevent dilution of the conditioner and ensure it can penetrate your hair effectively.

Use the right amount of product

Next, dispense an appropriate amount of natural conditioner into the palm of your hand. The amount you use will depend on your hair length and thickness. Start with a small amount and add more as needed, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, which tend to be drier and more prone to damage.

Rub the conditioner between your palms and then distribute it evenly throughout your damp hair, focusing on the areas that need the most moisture. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle any knots and ensure the conditioner is evenly distributed.

Allow the conditioner to absorb

Once the conditioner is applied, leave it on for a few minutes to allow the nourishing ingredients to work their magic. The length of time you leave the conditioner on will depend on the product's instructions and your hair's condition. For a deeper conditioning hair treatment, you can leave the conditioner on for a longer period or use a shower cap to trap heat and enhance absorption.

After the desired time has passed, rinse the conditioner thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water, as it can strip away moisture and leave your hair feeling dry and brittle. Make sure to rinse until the water runs clear and no residue remains, especially if you have fine hair prone to weighing down.

Rinse with cold water

For an extra boost of shine and smoothness, finish your hair washing routine with a final rinse of cold water. Cold water helps to seal the hair cuticles, locking in moisture and leaving your hair looking glossy and healthy.

After rinsing, gently towel dry with a soft towel to remove moisturise by blotting and squeezing. Avoid rubbing or wringing your hair, as this can cause damage and frizz. Instead, use a patting motion to absorb the water gently.
